Słooce wschodzi, więc i ja wstaję. Bolą mnie wszystkie stawy, a lewa noga ścierpła mi tak bardzo, że dopiero po kilku minutach spaceru odzyskuję w niej czucie. Spędziłam w lesie trzy godziny, ale nawet nie próbowałam zapolowad na serio, więc wracam z pustymi rękami. Dla mamy i mojej młodszej siostry to bez znaczenia. Stacje na mięso od rzeźnika w mieście, chociaż wcale nie smakuje nam bardziej niż świeża dziczyzna. Dzisiaj jednak mój najlepszy przyjaciel Gale Hawthorne i jego rodzina liczą na mnie i nie mogę ich zawieśd, wobec czego wyruszam na półtoragodzinny obchód po wnykach. Gdy chodziliśmy do szkoły, popołudniami wystarczało nam czasu na sprawdzanie sideł, polowanie i zbieractwo, a także na powrót do miasta i handel.
